Tootsietoy Ambulance

Found a neat little Tootsietoy ambulance from about 1950 in need of a refurbishment. Gave it a bit of a sanding, than masked it for paintwork:

I should have used a "filling" primer, as the white-metal casting had a bit of pitting, but I didn't. Gave it a shot of Krylon light yellow, than painted the details with some Testors gloss red and flat steel enamels:

That's roughly what it looked like new. However, it seemed a bit bland to me, so I added a few decals (I-94 Enterprises 1/100-scale):

Done...headed for the layout.

This has just enough character! I hate when old things are restored too perfectly! Except in the case of furniture!

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of "restorations" either, but in this case the piece was missing ~ 60% of its paint, so I didn't feel like I was destroying its originality. Back when I got into this hobby I was a great fan of making everything look pristine, but over time I came to appreciate the nicks and scratches left by children during play. Now only conditions involving corrosion and/or severe paint-loss gets a trip to the paint shed...
